7 Reference Books for Your Desk

I hate to admit this, but I rarely get an original idea. That’s bad for a writer.

However, I’ve got lots of paperback friends who help me sound smarter. They’re the seven reference texts I keep on top of my desk. Here they are, and why each one means so much to me.

1. Dictionary – And old teacher once told me, “If you don’t know the meaning, look it up.” Sound advice. My desk copy is “Webster’s New World Dictionary.”

2. Thesaurus – I’m always looking for a different way to say things, and this text helps me a lot. It’s called “Roget’s College Thesaurus.”

3. Idiom reference – People often use a common idiom or cliché’ to clarify what they say. I keep the “Scholastic Dictionary of Idioms” next to my keyboard.

4. Dictionary of synonyms – The one I use is “The Merriam-Webster Pocket Dictionary of Synonyms.”

5. Encyclopedia – To quickly find details on historical figures or products, I consult a great single volume paperback called “The New American Desk Encyclopedia.”

6. Quotations – A quote from an expert can add impact to a speech or report. The book I use is “The International Thesaurus of Quotations” by Rhoda Thomas Tripp.

7. Idea generator – Well, this sounds self-serving, but I often use my own book to give me ideas for first paragraphs, transitional sentences, and conclusions. That book is “Words That Stick” by Rix Quinn.

An Overview Of Parental Choices Regarding Education

This article will focus on what type of education is offered at private schools, independent schools, and prep schools. The names ‘private school’ and ‘independent school’ are actually one and the same thing, depending on the country you live in. The difference between these and public schools is that they are not funded by the state in any way.

This means that parents are paying for their children’s tutoring and not relying on the government to pay. Most private or independent schools offer scholarships or bursaries to children who perform well in certain subjects or sports at public schools. These entitle the successful applicants to receive the remainder of their education, or part of it, for no charge.

This is done to provide those children with an opportunity to excel further in the unique atmosphere of a private school. The scholarships are awarded in various categories, e.g. Sporting, academic, or arts. The reasons for scholarships are twofold; firstly, the individual child is afforded a head-start in education and, secondly, the school giving the scholarship is enrolling a high achiever which is good for their image.

Although many public schools have excellent reputations, there are definitely some benefits associated with an independent school. The most significant of all is the student to pupil ratio. Classes are small, enabling each child to receive more attention from the teacher. Also, the objective of an independent school is to nurture and develop a child’s natural talents.

Furthermore, an independent or private school is able to implement more sophisticated learning programs. Teachers at such schools are not paid a standardized salary like their counterparts at a government funded school. Instead, they are paid according to their experience and abilities in the same way that the corporate sector does. This means that the caliber of teachers is of a high quality and, again, the children receive the benefits.

There is also a stronger relationship between teachers and parents at a private school. Parental involvement is considered to be an integral part of their child’s learning cycle. Parents who can afford private schools are certainly making a worthwhile investment in their son or daughter’s education. As mentioned earlier, this is not to say that public schools do not produce outstanding students who go on to achieve in all areas of life.

A preparatory school is also called a prep school, or a primary school. Again, the terminology and description varies in countries. In the USA, for example, a prep school is an independent, or private, secondary or high school. In contrast, other countries including the UK, a preparatory school is one that prepares pre-adolescent children for high school. The age-group in this case is 8 to 12 year-olds.

When it comes to education, another decision facing parents worldwide is whether to send their children to single-sex schools or those that are co-educational. Lengthy studies done around the world indicate that children who have received education in a single-sex environment learn better and achieve more. A study done in Australia involved 270,000 boys and girls and it was found that both sexes obtained higher results at separate schools.

Masonic Symbols – The Symbolism of Freemasonry & Its Reference to Lucifer

There is often much discussion about the symbols that are utilized in Freemasonry. Some non-Freemasons or those that feel that they are a cult suggest that their symbols are synchronized with devil worship.

The Blazing Star is considered by the Freemasons as one of their ornaments. The anti Freemasons have a different view on it. They base their theory on the Bible scripture Isaiah 14:12. Which is believed to be the “false dawn” referring to Lucifer. This being the Christian belief then it must mean that the Freemasons are involved in Satanism because of the Blazing Star they utilize as one of their symbols.

The interpretation of Isaiah 14:12 has a different meaning according to the Freemasons. Their interpretation is quite complex but is basically like this…This Biblical chapter relates to prophesy which the entire book of Isaiah does. In chapter 14 it contains a prophesy regarding the Kings of Babylon centering specifically on Nebuchadnezzar. The Freemasons explain that this particular King thought himself about mankind as a celestial body, but when Babylon is destroyed, Nebuchadnezzar will find himself as simply mortal. The scripture is often referred to in the Hebrew language. The word heyleyl translated means daystar and refers to the planet Venus. Being a book of prophesy it can be complex to understand.

Vulgate translation:

Hebrew = “daystar” = Lucifer (Venus was classed as the morning star and in Ancient times referred to as Lucifer.
Christian translation = Lucifer = Satan
Latin translations = Lucifer = Light bearing

Freemasons:
Hebrew: day-star=heyleyl = planet Venus

The planet Venus could be seen during both the day and the evening. The Greeks and the Romans had set names for it when it appeared in the morning and set names for it when it appeared in the evening.

In the morning…
Greeks = Phosphorus
Romans = Lucifer

In the evening
Greeks = Hesperus
Romans = Venus

From Hebrew to Greek into Latin would translate it to Lucifer. The argument that the Freemasons offer is that the term “Lucifer” in reference to Satan or the devil never existed further back than the middle ages and it became a common term for the devil because of a poem called “Paradise Lost.

So where does all of this fit in with the concept of the Blazing Star as the Freemasons see it. They will refer to the Minnesota Masonic Manual. Apparently, this manual is one of the teaching aids they use at their lectures. This Manual is said to depict the Blazing star as a symbol of the Star of Bethlehem and has nothing to do with the Planet Venus.

In addition to this, they stipulate than the reference to this only lasts about thirty seconds yet the specific lecture is about 30 minutes. Mind you, it is pointed out that it depends on what jurisdiction this is taking place in. This lecture takes place in the first degree of the Masonry program.

In summary, the Freemasons stipulate that the misconception of them being devil worshippers is a misconstrued interpretation of the Bible taken out of context. Christianity’s stance is that the chapter we have just discussed is in direct reference to Lucifer. They have based their opinion on a parallel in the Gospel of St Luke. Jesus talks about Satan falling like lightning from heaven. Therefore, in Christian terms this is translated as the “Day Star” in Isaiah. It must be remembered there are many parallels in the New Testament referring back to the Old Testament. This very complex subject needs to be relied on in accordance to Biblical scholars.
